Dr. Nathan Hurwitz brings something rare to college admissions consulting: more than thirty years of experience inside higher education itself. As a tenured university professor, published author, Broadway conductor, and editor of the "Higher Ed Insider" newsletter, he understands how colleges think, how they evaluate applicants, and what separates a compelling application from one that gets overlooked. For families navigating one of the most consequential — and stressful — processes of their child's academic life, that depth of institutional knowledge makes all the difference.

Dr. Hurwitz holds degrees from New York University, Northwestern University, and the University of Pittsburgh, and has held faculty appointments at all three institutions. At NYU, Syracuse University, and the University of Pittsburgh, among others, he taught at the undergraduate and graduate level in the schools of journalism, liberal arts, and fine arts, developing the kind of rigorous, student-centered teaching practice that now shapes every aspect of his admissions work. He is a proud member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

His scholarly credentials are equally distinctive. Dr. Hurwitz is the author of four published works spanning some of the most respected names in academic and popular publishing. With Routledge, he published "A History of the American Musical Theatre: No Business Like It" and {Songwriters of the American Musical Theatre: A Style Guide for Singers{ — both authoritative textbooks in their field. For DK/Penguin, he authored "Musicals: The Definitive Illustrated Story," a widely read reference work that brought the history of the world stage and screen musical to a broad popular audience. He is also the author of "SAT Prep Mastery," a test preparation resource for college-bound students. The skills that make a strong academic author — clarity of argument, structural precision, and the ability to translate complex ideas into compelling narrative — are the same skills he brings to college essay development.

As editor of the "Higher Ed Insider" newsletter, Dr. Hurwitz tracks and analyzes the forces reshaping American higher education in real time. His expertise has taken him well beyond the classroom: he has delivered academic papers and led plenary sessions at major conferences in Brisbane, Australia; Barcelona, Spain; London, England; Vienna, Austria; and across North America. That international perspective gives him a uniquely broad view of how universities assess readiness, intellectual potential, and fit — insight that directly informs how he positions each student's application.

Before his academic career, Dr. Hurwitz worked as a Broadway and international touring conductor — a role that demanded calm leadership under pressure, meticulous coordination of complex moving parts, and the ability to bring out the best in individual performers within a high-stakes, highly complex environment. Those same skills animate his elite college admissions consulting practice today.

Dr. Hurwitz's admissions philosophy begins with a conviction that most strong students are under-presented, not underqualified. Selective colleges are not simply looking for the highest grades or the longest list of activities. They are looking for students who think clearly, reflect honestly, and communicate with purpose. The work of admissions consulting, at its best, is not about packaging or spin — it is about helping a student understand what is genuinely distinctive about the way they engage with the world, and then building an application that makes that visible. That process takes time, structured thinking, and an experienced guide who knows how institutions read the materials they receive.

His consulting process reflects that philosophy at every stage. Engagements begin with a thorough discovery conversation to assess a student's academic profile, extracurricular depth, and long-term direction. From there, Dr. Hurwitz develops a strategic college list calibrated to each student's ambitions and strengths, identifies the narrative thread that will unify their application, and guides the development of a personal statement and supplemental essays that reflect genuine intellectual maturity. Activities are reviewed and reframed to emphasize leadership, initiative, and sustained commitment rather than volume. Students preparing for interviews receive structured coaching designed to build clarity and confidence, not scripts. For performing arts applicants in Musical Theatre, Acting, and Vocal Performance, he integrates specialized guidance on prescreens, repertoire selection, audition preparation, and the unique demands of BFA admissions alongside the academic application.

Families who work with Dr. Hurwitz describe the experience as structured, calm, and substantive. Parents receive clear timelines, honest assessments, and consistent communication throughout the process. Students gain more than a stronger application — they develop the analytical writing skills, the intellectual self-awareness, and the confidence to present themselves clearly in any setting. The goal is not simply admission to a selective university. It is readiness for everything that follows.

Dr. Hurwitz works with a deliberately limited number of students each admissions cycle. His clients have earned admission to some of the most selective institutions in the country, including MIT, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Duke University, Northwestern University, Williams College, UC Berkeley, and many others.

Admissions outcomes matter. The development of confident, capable young adults matters more.

Featured Testimonials

★★★★★

When we first started the process, our son had excellent grades but no clear narrative about who he was as a student. Dr. Hurwitz helped him step back and see how his interests in economics, debate, and community service actually connected. The guidance he provided on both strategy and essays transformed the entire application process. Our son was ultimately admitted to several selective universities, including the University of Michigan and Georgetown, where he is now enrolled. We are deeply grateful for the calm, thoughtful guidance throughout what could have been a very stressful year.

The essay process felt overwhelming for our daughter at first. Dr. Hurwitz helped her identify experiences that truly mattered to her and encouraged her to write with honesty and depth rather than trying to impress admissions officers. His feedback was thoughtful and always respectful of her voice. The final essay was something she felt genuinely proud of, and the confidence she gained from that process carried through the rest of her applications.

What impressed us most was how seriously Dr. Hurwitz took the responsibility of guiding our daughter through this process. He didn’t simply edit essays or suggest colleges. He helped her think more deeply about her academic interests and long-term goals. The structure he provided kept everything organized and manageable for our entire family.

So far, N. has received acceptance letters from Princeton and Virginia Tech.  We have our hearts set on Princeton, but he insists on waiting until everything comes in and weighing the pros and cons of each school.  He would not be in such a good position without you!

I’m attending Penn State at the Schreyer Honors College. I wanted to thank you for the impact my whole application package had, but especially my ACT test score (35 composite). That score helped secure Penn State's Millennium Scholars Program, which provides a full scholarship to undergraduate STEM majors.   I am ecstatic with the position I am in and thankful for everything you’ve done for me.

The essay process made me think harder than anything I did in school — and my writing became much stronger. I have submitted my applications and am progressing through the process.  Just a couple of days ago, I was chosen for the Posse scholarship for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This is a big moment for me in the college process.

Nathan helped me so much in preparing for my college applications and interviews! He gave in-depth feedback in our mock interview that I was able to use in my admissions interview. My interviewer even said I had the best answer to a question that he had heard, and that answer was partially thanks to Nathan’s amazing preparation!

From Unfocused Ambition to a Naval Academy Appointment (Case Study #1)

A student of mine dreamed of attending the United States Naval Academy to study engineering and pursue military service. His application made his activities appear scattered, and his essays failed to communicate a cohesive motivation for service academy life.

Together, we identified the qualities central to Naval Academy admissions—leadership, service, discipline, and resilience. We reframed his experiences to present a cohesive narrative connecting engineering interests, mentorship through math tutoring, and leadership development through scouting. Even a year of weaker academic performance was addressed constructively as evidence of resilience and growth.

His final application presented a clear story of leadership and commitment to service. The student was offered an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, fulfilling his goal of pursuing an engineering education while preparing for military leadership.

From Scattered Interests to  Aerospace Engineer (Case study #2)

A student with exceptional academic ability hoped to study aerospace engineering at a top school, ultimately targeting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Although her grades and coursework were outstanding, her extracurricular activities did not seem to clearly demonstrate her interest in aerospace engineering.

Working together, we examined her experiences closely and identified a consistent theme of technical curiosity and problem-solving. Coursework, independent interests, and smaller engineering projects were reframed to present a cohesive narrative of a student deeply engaged with engineering ideas and motivated to pursue aerospace study.

The final application presented a clear and compelling applicant. The student was admitted to several top programs, including M.I.T. Ultimately, she chose to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology—the nation’s second leading aerospace engineering program—after receiving a particularly strong financial offer.

From Uncertain Direction to the Right Campus Community (Case Study #3)

A student with a good academic record entered the admissions process without a clear major or defined academic pathway. While he was intellectually curious and performed well in school, he worried that the absence of a specific academic focus might weaken his applications to highly selective colleges.

Working together, we shifted the application's focus toward his greatest strength, the qualities that would make him an outstanding campus community member. His essays and activities highlighted broad intellectual curiosity, strong engagement with peers and teachers, and a strong commitment to community service through local volunteering and service organizations.

The final application showed a student who would contribute meaningfully to both the academic and social life of a campus community. He was admitted to Williams College as an undeclared major, where his intellectual curiosity, collaborative spirit, and commitment to service made him an excellent match for the college’s academic and campus culture.
