The BFA College Admissions Blind Spot Most Consultants Miss

If your kid wants to study theater, dance, or film, regular college advice will actively hurt their chances — not because it’s wrong, but because it’s answering a different question entirely.

A completely different track

BFA admissions run on a completely different track than a typical academic application. Students aren’t just submitting grades and an essay — they’re preparing audition material, building a portfolio, and writing an artistic statement that has to work alongside the academic side of the application. Most general college consultants have never coached a student through an audition cycle.

Where the credibility actually comes from

I have — from years performing and directing professionally, all the way through helping students prepare BFA-specific materials that actually reflect their artistry rather than a generic version of what a program is assumed to want. That specific, hands-on experience is what a BFA-bound family actually needs in a consultant.

The prospective BFA student faces a unique challenge, one best addressed by a college counselor who has deep knowledge of these areas of both education and the art forms.

Do's & Don'ts

DO

DON'T

✓  Start audition and portfolio prep on a separate timeline from academics.

✗  Don’t treat a BFA application like a standard academic one.

✓  Choose material that reflects the student’s actual artistry, not a safe imitation.

✗  Don’t choose audition material to look impressive rather than to fit the student.

✓  Coordinate the artistic statement with the rest of the application, not in isolation.

✗  Don’t leave portfolio and academic timelines uncoordinated.

✓  Seek guidance from someone with real audition or portfolio-review experience.

✗  Don’t assume general college advice transfers cleanly to conservatory programs.

DR. HURWITZ'S TAKE

Most families don’t realize how different this track is until they’re already behind on it. If your student is BFA-bound, this is the exact thing I specialize in — not as a side note to general admissions work, but as its own discipline.
