Where legacy matters, and where it doesn't
A small number of Ivy League and top-tier colleges or universities have historically given some weight to legacy status, and that practice has faced increasing scrutiny and, at several schools, outright elimination in recent years. The overwhelming majority of four-year colleges, including many excellent ones, don't factor it in at all.
What actually moves the needle instead
Strategy, fit, and a coherent application narrative outweigh a family connection at nearly every school on a typical student's list. Families spending energy worrying about legacy status are almost always better served redirecting that energy toward the essay and the school list.
What to do about it
• Don't let legacy status at one school shape the strategy for the rest of the list.
• Confirm current legacy policy directly with each school; it has been changing school by school in recent years.
• Focus preparation time on the factors that apply everywhere: narrative, fit, and academic strength.
