College Application Myth: “Reach, Match, Safety” Is Enough of a List Strategy

Everyone tells you to build a list of colleges including reach, match, and safety schools. On its own, that framework isn’t enough anymore, and treating it as the whole strategy is where a lot of school lists go wrong.

What the framework leaves out

A reach, match, and safety list of collegesonly looks at your odds of admission. It says nothing about whether your kid will actually thrive at a given school — the academic environment, the size, the culture, the financial reality. A safety school that’s a terrible fit isn’t actually safe; it’s just a fallback nobody wants to attend.

Building around fit first

I build lists around fit first, then layer admit odds on top of that foundation. Fit over prestige isn’t just a nice phrase in this context — it’s the actual method for building a list that a student would be genuinely glad to land on, at every tier of the list.

Do's & Don'ts

DO

DON'T

✓  Evaluate culture, size, and academic environment before sorting by odds.

✗  Don’t sort schools into reach/match/safety before considering fit.

✓  Choose a safety school the student would actually be glad to attend.

✗  Don’t treat a safety school as an afterthought in the list-building process.

✓  Layer admit-odds categories on top of a fit-first shortlist, not instead of one.

✗  Don’t build a list around prestige and back into a fit rationale later.

✓  Revisit fit whenever the list changes, not just at the start.

✗  Don’t assume admit odds alone tell you whether a school is right.

DR. HURWITZ'S TAKE

Fit over prestige isn’t just a nice phrase — it’s the actual method. A list built this way still respects admit odds; it just refuses to let odds be the only variable that matters.
