The College Admissions Legacy Myth: Do You Really Need a Family Connection?

Legacy admissions gets outsized attention relative to how few students it actually affects. For the vast majority of colleges in this country, it plays no role in the decision at all — and families spend real energy worrying about a factor that, at most schools on a typical list, simply isn't in play.
Where legacy matters, and where it doesn't
A small number of highly selective private institutions have historically given some weight to legacy status when granting college admissions, and that practice has faced increasing scrutiny and, at several schools, outright elimination in recent years. The overwhelming majority of four-year colleges, including many excellent ones, don't factor it in at all — and policies at the schools that once did have been shifting quickly enough that last year's assumption may already be out of date.
What actually moves the needle instead
Strategy, fit, and a coherent application narrative outweigh a family connection at nearly every school on a typical student's list. Families spending energy worrying about legacy status are almost always better served redirecting that energy toward the essay and the school list, where the actual leverage lives.
